IFS couples therapy provides an effective method for improving communication and emotional connection between partners. Often in everyday interactions, partners communicate through their defensive parts, leading to conflict and misunderstandings. IFS couples therapy addresses the individual emotional needs of each partner and creates a space where they can connect and express themselves in a way that leads to understanding and harmony.
What to expect from couples therapy?
- Understanding Defense Mechanisms - Couples often communicate through their defenses, such as Critical, Angry, Explaining, and Withdrawing.
- Connecting with needs - therapy creates an environment where everyone can be authentic, connect with their needs and express them as a request.
- Learning to have difficult conversations safely - communicating with our partner in a way that we can be heard and understood.
IFS therapy is not appropriate for couples in which there is violence because we work with vulnerable parts of ourselves that are not safe to disclose in a violent relationship.
